Freight Shipments

The term "freight" is used when someone refers to the transportation of a certain item through a third party. Freight shipments are separated in to a few categories, based on the size of the cargo and some other factors.

Less than truckload (LTL) freight represents the majority of shipments that take place. In a less than truckload shipment, the loan can exceed 15,000 pounds and no item can be larger than 100" wide and longer than 28'. These measures are imposed by the size of the truck, which is usually 28'. LTL doesn't offer packaging and those who need a shipment must be careful with this aspect. Many items are sent in the same truck and you should pack your cargo in a crate or something strong because you don't want anything to happen to it. This way of functioning is the same in air freight shipments and you can't exceed these limits.

If you have something that weights more than 15,000 pounds and you need to ship it in another place, it is better to get a whole truck just for your cargo. It will classify under the truckload (TL) freight category. You will be able to make large transports when it comes to mass, but you won't be able to exceed the 80,000 pounds limit. While the length of your item can be close to 53 feet in some cases, you still can't get an item that is wider than 100 inches. If you have such cargo, you will find truckload freight more economical than less than truckload freight.

The cost of a transport is based on a few factors: first of all, the distance. Each freight company has a price per mile. Beside this, you will pay differently for different cargo. For example, if you want to transport a block of steel from A to B, you will pay less that if you had to transport a huge china statue on the same distance. If your items are fragile, you will have to pay more. To prevent any confusion, the National Motor Freight Traffic Association issued a publication in which you will be able to find a list of all types of cargo. You will be able to calculate how much you have to pay for a shipment depending on the nature of your item. There are other factors that can raise the value of a transport such as special requirements from the customer. If the client wants a freight truck at a certain hour, he will have to pay an additional fee. Truck travel on a specific route, but if you can pay the fee, they will change their route to get to your house whenever you want them.

Because dealing with other people's cargo can be stressful and leaving your items into a truck with other heavy cargo can be hard to do, you can get insurance for anything that you need to ship. You won't get full cargo value, but it is better than to not having anything at all.

If you want to ship an item you need to find the best freight method to do it. After you settle on a certain type of carrier, you need to think about the packaging. The price is also important and make sure that there won't be any additional costs. In the end, get insurance and wait for your cargo to arrive at the destination. If you talk everything through, you won't have any problems with your shipment.
